Other / Unknown

Everybody gets lumps, moles and marks on the skin but it can be very worrying when a new mark appears or changes. Fortunately most marks will be harmless. In our experience of talking to patients, one of the main reasons people get in touch is because of the anxiety that a lesion on the skin could be cancer.

When to seek consultation?

If an existing mark or new lesion does any of the following, it is important to get it checked out:

  • Asymmetrical (uneven) shape
  • Irregular looking borders – edges that are jagged or hard to distinguish
  • Changes in colour particularly if multi-coloured
  • Growth – a lesion that grows rapidly or exceeds 6mm in diameter
  • Symptoms of pain, bleeding, discharge that are unexplained
  • A scabbed lesion that does not heal within 4 weeks
  • Change in sensation
