Lumps / bumps

We all get lumps and bumps on our skin, most of them do not cause any concern. It is often obvious what they are, such as a mole. Some lumps and bumps may grow under the skin and the commonest we deal with are cysts and lipomas (harmless growth of fatty tissue). Anybody can get them however there are some inherited conditions that make you more prone to developing cysts and lipomas.

What are epidermal cysts?

Epidermal cysts (sometimes referred to as sebaceous cysts) are very common and harmless growths of the skin.

They are often a round lump under the skin that contain keratin (skin cells) and other material that can be soft, fluid-like or pustular. They can become infected, forming an abscess. They generally grow slowly over time and vary in size from pea-sized to several centimetres.

What is a lipoma?

Lipomas are harmless, soft, fatty lumps under the skin. They feel squishy and can vary in size from a few millimetres to several centimetres. They are not usually symptomatic and can appear anywhere on the body.

When should a lump or bump get checked?

If you are unsure what a lump or bump is, it is important to get the diagnosis confirmed by your Doctor. Should you develop any of the following symptoms, these should also be checked by a medical professional:

  • Any lump that is growing quickly, particularly if larger than 5cm
  • Symptoms of pain and/or bleeding
  • A lump that is hard and doesn’t move under the skin
  • A lump that is getting infected (red, hot, sore, swollen and may discharge pus)
